Sharon Principal's Update: 12/4/20

Dear Sharon Parents and Guardians,

Tải xuống club jarOur staff is gearing up for the transition to full remote learning on Monday, December 7. Teachers are dedicated to providing the best possible learning experience for our students remotely. While we love being with our students in person, we will make the most of it and remain hopeful that we will be back together in person in January.

Remote learning information and an example schedule are available through the links below. Please remember that this is a basic framework/example and the content within each block of time may need adjusted based on the grade level. Plans for remote learning will look very different than students experienced last spring. Students will be actively engaged in live learning sessions with their teachers throughout the day. We appreciate your patience and grace as we make the transition to remote learning. 

Students absent from school on Friday may pick up a Chromebook and belongings on Monday, December 7 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. or from 1-3 p.m. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 330-239-1901, ext. 4235.

Superintendent's Update: 12/4/20

Dear Highland Parents,

As we prepare to transition to remote learning on Monday, December 7, I want to provide additional information as a follow-up to yesterday’s message. As communicated in August, we expected there could be times when we would need to transition between learning models. While our goal remains to offer in-person learning for the remainder of the year, we also need to ensure that we are doing that in the safest manner possible, using the latest information available to us.    

Over the past three weeks, 28 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, requiring 467 students and staff to be quarantined during that same time period.

Superintendent's Message: 12/3/20

Dear Highland Parents,

We were informed today, December 3, that Medina County has moved to a Level 4, COVID County Alert Level of “Purple.” According to the Ohio Department of Health, Level 4 indicates “severe exposure and spread” in the overall community. 

Tải xuống club jarWhile our school district has continued to safely offer in-person learning to our students to this point, the time has come to temporarily “push pause” on in-person learning for the next several weeks. During that time, it is our hope that case numbers and other key indicators in the county will begin to substantially trend downward. 

As a result of the public health announcement today, the district will be moving to the following learning schedules:

Remote Learning
Effective Monday, December 7, 2020 through January 15, 2021

Hybrid Learning
January 19 – 22, 2021

Return to In-Person Learning

Tải xuống club jarWe will finish this week (Friday, December 4) with all students in-person and will work tomorrow to make the transition into remote learning (including distribution of chromebooks) as smooth as possible. More information will follow. 

We will continue to monitor and assess this situation in collaboration with public health officials. As always, we appreciate your continued support during this unprecedented public health emergency.

Important COVID-Related Questions & Information

The district has received several questions this week as it relates to COVID-19 protocols. In an effort to answer some of these questions, we offer the following information.

  • Q.  Who is considered a direct contact/close contact to someone with COVID-19?
  • A.  A direct contact/close contact is anyone who was within 6 ft. of an infected person for 15 minutes or longer. *An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours (2 days) before the person has any symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19.
     
  • Q.  When will the school district contact you?
  • A.  There are three types of contacts the district may make with a family.
USDA Extends Free Meal Option through Academic Year

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on October 9 that it is extending regulatory flexibility in light of the pandemic to allow schools to offer free meals to all children through the current academic year. USDA had previously approved flexibility through December.

The flexibilities allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children through June 2021. This unprecedented move will help ensure – no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. USDA has been and continues to be committed to using the Congressionally appropriated funding that has been made available.  

Q: What does this mean for Highland students – including those enrolled in the VLA program?

Q: Does my child have to qualify for Free & Reduced Lunch status?
A: No. All students are eligible to receive meals through this federally subsidized program through June 2021

VLA Lunch Request Distribution Form

The Highland School District will offer lunches at NO COST to ANY Highland students enrolled in the Virtual Learning Academy. This service is offered in conjunction with the USDA free lunch program. You do not have to be eligible for free and reduced lunch status to qualify. 

The district will offer school lunch meal “pick-up” on a weekly distribution. Families with students enrolled in the Highland VLA can receive a WEEKLY allotment of their child's school lunches. 

Beginning Monday, September 28 through Friday, December 20, 2020 (end of the USDA free lunch program), lunches will be distributed to families for the entire week. Each lunch bag will contain 5 complete lunches. (Please note, we will not be serving lunches on weekends or scheduled holidays).

All orders must be placed by 12 p.m. on Friday preceding the upcoming week's offering OR parents may sign up for all 12 weeks when completing the form. Parents must complete the following “VLA Lunch Request Distribution Form” in order to receive the free lunches. (COMPLETE A SEPARATE FORM FOR EACH CHILD).
